BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU softball player Layna Savoie was recently named to the Blazer Chapter of Mortar Board’s Top Ten Freshmen at LSU for the 2013-14 academic year, as the organization hosted its banquet this past Sunday honoring the group in the International Room in the LSU Student Union.
Out of the more than 5,000 freshmen that began attending LSU last fall, Savoie and nine others were selected based on their excellence in service, scholarship and leadership, as the honorary group for seniors whittled down the list to those that have shown the ideals of the organization.
“This is a tremendous honor, and I am very humbled and thankful to be selected by this amazing organization,” Savoie said. “It’s a privilege to be able to attend LSU and play the sport I love, and I wouldn’t be here without the support from my family, teammates and coaches and faculty here at the university.”
The Lake Charles and Barbe High School product was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete list back in early October, coming off of a freshman season where she was selected to the Southeastern Conference Spring Honor Roll and being the only Tiger to be named to the SEC First-Year Honor Roll. She appeared in 12 games last season, scoring twice and sitting a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.
Away from the diamond, Savoie is a member of the LSU Honors College, and has been selected for membership for Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Lambda Delta, Gamma Phi Beta, Golden Key and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars honor societies.
