BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s basketball coach Nikki Caldwell has received a National Letter of Intent from Ayana Mitchell as announced Friday as part of the NCAA early signing period.

Mitchell, a 6-2 forward from Salem High School in Conyers, Georgia, will join the Lady Tigers for her freshman season in 2015-16. She is a four-star recruit and ranked as a Top 50 player by a vast number of recruiting websites which include ESPNW.

Mitchell amassed 18.1 points, 12.4 rebounds 3.7 steals and 1.0 blocks per game en route to Class 5A All-State First-Team honors during her junior season. She plays with her back to the basket and has soft touch in her mid-post face-up game. Mitchell scored a school-record 46 points during a game in December 2013. She also possesses a high-motor, is an active competitor on the glass and a focused defender. In the classroom, Mitchell boasts a 3.6 GPA.

Ayana Mitchell is an outstanding competitor,” Caldwell said. “She’s someone who’s going to bring a lot of energy to our team. She has a relentless attitude toward playing this game. She’s an aggressive rebounder, and is someone who will help us defensively. She is a very skilled offensive player who will be a threat in the paint. More importantly, Ayana is an exceptional person. She’s a player that will sacrifice for the betterment of her team and her teammates. We’re extremely excited that she is going to be a future Lady Tiger, and I look forward to her arrival.”

LSU wraps up its five-game homestand to open the 2014-15 season and meets Rutgers Saturday afternoon at the Maravich Center.

Tip time is slated for 2 p.m., and game will be carried online only by SEC Network Plus via www.WatchESPN.com and the Watch ESPN app. Lyn Rollins and Victor Howell will serve as the announcing team.
