Baseball to Take Part in Three Service Events

BATON ROUGE, La. — The LSU baseball team will participate in three community service events on Saturday as the Tigers continue to perform active roles in philanthropic projects.

The team will take part in the Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Buddy Walk and the Walk to Defeat ALS. Twelve members of the squad are scheduled to be at each event.

The Walk to Cure Diabetes will occur from 8:30 a.m. until Noon at the “Old Front Nine” on the LSU campus, Nicholson Drive near Burbank Drive.

The Buddy Walk, designed to raise awareness and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome, takes place at Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge, 19202 Highland Road. The walk begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m.

The Walk to Defeat ALS will be held at Baton Rouge’s Highland Road Park, 14024 Highland Road, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The event promotes awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“Community service is part of the responsibility of being an LSU baseball player,” coach Paul Mainieri said. “It’s important that our players interact with the public and attempt to make a positive impact upon the lives of others. It’s a very rewarding experience, and it gives our players a greater appreciation of their own lives.”

The Tigers log over 400 hours of community service each academic year. The team regularly participates in children’s hospital visits in the Baton Rouge area, meeting with patients and their families while signing autographs, posing for pictures and lifting their spirits.

The Tigers also take part in reading programs at local elementary and middle schools, encouraging students to enhance their reading and studying skills.
