BATON ROUGE – With three straight wins, including a dramatic 10-7 victory over third-ranked Ole Miss, the LSU football team has been honored among the university’s athletic programs with the BASF Team Chemistry MVP Award for the month of October.
LSU heads into the stretch run of the season with a 7-2 overall mark and a 3-2 league record following consecutive wins over Florida, Kentucky and Ole Miss. The Tigers are ranked No. 16 in this week’s Associated Press poll, No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches poll and No. 19 in the first College Football Playoff standings.
The Tigers are open this week before hosting third-ranked Alabama next Saturday night in Tiger Stadium.
LSU’s relied on a dominant defense and bruising running game to win its last three games. On Oct. 11 in Gainesville, LSU forced three turnovers, including a pass interception with less than a minute left in the contest that setup the game-winning field goal for the Tigers in the 30-27 win over the Gators.
The following week, LSU’s defense held Kentucky to season-lows for points (3), total yards (217), rushing yards (71) and passing yards (146) in beating the Wildcats, 41-3, in Tiger Stadium. Meanwhile on offense, senior running back Terrence Magee exploded for 127 rushing yards and a pair of TDs in the LSU victory.
Last week, LSU played its best game of the year on both sides of the ball, rushing for 264 yards on an Ole Miss defense that was limiting opponents to just 97 yards a contest. Leonard Fournette churned out 113 yards to lead the dominant rushing attack against the Rebels.
The Tigers recorded its third fourth-quarter comeback of the season when quarterback Anthony Jennings connected with tight end Logan Stokes on a 3-yard TD pass with 5:07 left in the contest to give LSU a 10-7 lead.
Defensively, the Tigers held the Rebels to just a first quarter touchdown and only 313 total yards in the 10-7 victory. LSU safety Ronald Martin intercepted a Bo Wallace pass at the 1-yard line with two seconds left in the game to halt any shot Ole Miss had at either tying or winning the game.
The win over Ole Miss, capped an impressive three-game stretch for the Tigers, one that saw LSU outscore its opponents 81-37.
