The Tigers (5-11-2, 1-7-1 SEC) will be looking to snap a five-game losing skid in Southeastern Conference play when they face the No. 8-ranked Gators (12-4, 7-2) on Sunday afternoon at the LSU Soccer Stadium.
Florida enters Sunday’s match ranked as high as No. 8 nationally in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Continental Tire Top 25 poll released this past Tuesday. The Gators also boast a ranking of No. 9 nationally in this week’s TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 25 and a No. 13 national ranking in this week’s Soccer America Top 25 also released on Tuesday of last week.
In addition, the Gators are the No. 7-ranked team in the NCAA’s own Ratings Percentage Index as they compete for a national seed in the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Tournament beginning next month.
The Tigers are looking for their first win in the series since the 2011 season when they went on the road to defeat the 11th-ranked Gators at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville on Oct. 23 of that season in which the squad went on to finish in second place in the final SEC regular season standings with a sparkling 8-3 mark and 24 points in SEC play. It remains LSU’s only win in the all-time series as Florida owns the commanding 14-1-2 advantage in the series that dates back to LSU’s inaugural 1995 season.
Florida is again battling 2013 SEC Co-Champion Texas A&M for conference supremacy again this fall as the Gators enter Sunday’s match second in the table with a 7-2 mark and 21 points in SEC play with only two to play in the 2014 regular season. Texas A&M currently tops the table with an 8-1 mark and 24 points with its only defeat coming to Florida by a 1-0 margin back on Oct. 3.
Sophomore striker Savannah Jordan spearheads the Florida attack once again this fall as she remains the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals and 29 points in what is sure to be another All-American season.
Jordan burst onto the collegiate scene a season ago when she scored a team-leading 22 goals and 47 points while becoming the first freshman in SEC history to be named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year. She went on the also claim NSCAA Second-Team All-America honors, while being named the National Freshman of the Year by both Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com following the 2013 season.
Sunday will be Student Appreciation Day at the LSU Soccer Stadium as students will be served cookies and ice cream before the game. LSU Soccer’s official 2014 trading cards will also be handed out at the gate as there will be a special autograph session with the team immediately following the match.
After playing host to the No. 8-ranked Florida Gators on Sunday afternoon, LSU will next play host to the Auburn Tigers on Thursday night in the third of a three-game homestand to wrap up the 2014 regular season, as kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CT at the LSU Soccer Stadium. Thursday’s match against Auburn will also be stream live online on the SEC Network+.
