OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – LSU freshman pitcher Allie Walljasper has been selected as one of 22 players invited to try out for the 2015 USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team as announced today by USA Softball and the Amateur Softball Association.
Walljasper is one of 17 current active freshmen on collegiate rosters, as the team will be made up of players 19-and-under who, upon accepting the invitation, will participate in the selection camp which will be held Jan. 3-4 at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, California.
“It’s a tremendous honor for any of our athletes to be considered for the national team pool,” LSU assistant coach Howard Dobson said, who also serves as an assistant for the senior women’s national team.
After the camp, 17 players will be selected to represent the USA at the World Cup of Softball X that will run from June 30-July 5 in Southern California, before going on to participate in the ISF Junior Women’s World Championship in Oklahoma City August 9-15. The team will be coached by current Cal State Fullerton head coach Tairia Flowers, with assistants to be named at a later day.
Additional athletes may be invited to the USA Softball JWNT Selection Camp at a later date while additional opportunities for athletes to try out will be announced on November 3 via USASoftball.com. During the selection process, athletes will participate in position drills as well as simulated games and be evaluated by the USA Softball Women’s National Team Selection Committee.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for her and what she’s done up until this point,” Dobson said. “It shows you what kind of future she has not only here at LSU, but within the USA Softball program. With all of the athletes in the country that play this sport, for her to be selected for this is a big honor.”
