BATON ROUGE – The LSU Men’s Tennis Team continued their action at both the Cajun Classic in Lafayette and the SEC Fall Classic in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday. The doubles team of juniors Tam Trinh and Andrew Korinek qualified for the championship round with their strong showing.
Trinh and Korinek defeated Texas freshman John Mee and junior Michael Riechmann in the semifinals by a score of 3-6, 7-6 (5), (4) to secure their spot in the championship round on Sunday. Trinh also made some noise in the singles consolation bracket with his 6-1, 7-5 victory over TCU freshman Guillermo Nunez. Nunez, a native of Chile, has been ranked as high as No. 1 among South American players and has played in the juniors of three majors including Wimbledon, the French Open and the U.S. Open.
“We had a good day. Tam [Trinh] and Andrew [Korinek] have not played their best but are competing well and have a shot at winning a title tomorrow,” said assistant coach Danny Bryan. “In singles, Tam had a great win against Nunez. He has stepped up this weekend.”
The Tigers weren’t as successful at the SEC Fall Classic but junior Harrison Kennedy was able to get a victory in the singles consolation bracket over Mississippi State sophomore Robin Haden by a score of 6-2, 6-1. LSU is looking at the remaining days of competition as an opportunity to grow as a team.
“Harrison [Kennedy] had a good win and Justin and Boris fought hard,” said head coach Jeff Brown. “We have a few more matches to use for developing and improvement.
Both tournaments will resume play on Sunday, Sept. 21, as the Tigers continue to improve and build momentum in the early part of the fall season.
