Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball magazine poll released Monday … the 2014 LSU team is the fifth Tiger squad to earn the top ranking during the eight-season tenure of coach Paul Mainieri … the 2013 team was ranked No. 1 for one week in April and again in late May as the Tigers entered the NCAA Tournament … the 2012 squad held a No. 1 ranking twice, once in mid-April and once in early June … the 2009 team, which won the national championship, was ranked No. 1 in seven different weeks, and the 2010 Fighting Tiger squad held a No. 1 ranking for three weeks … junior right-hander Aaron Nola fired a no-hitter for seven innings Friday night versus Virginia Tech before leaving the game due to a pitch count restriction … Nola threw 87 pitches in seven shutout frames, allowing no hits with one walk and eight strikeouts … it was the deepest an LSU pitcher had gone in a game without giving up a hit since April 15, 1995, when right-hander Brian Winders threw 8.2 hitless innings at Ole Miss … Nola improved to 2-0 with Friday’s win over the Hokies, and he has a 0.00 ERA in 13 innings with one walk and 14 strikeouts … freshman left-hander Jared Poche’ worked seven strong innings on Sunday to defeat Texas Southern in Alex Box Stadium … the southpaw allowed just one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts … Poche’ improved to 2-0 on the year and lowered his season ERA to 0.69 … in 13 innings, he’s allowed just one run on eight hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts, and opponents are batting only .174 against him … senior outfielder Sean McMullen collected six RBI in three of the Tigers’ wins last week, including a three-run homer in Friday’s victory over Virginia Tech … junior first baseman catcher Tyler Moore hit .417 (5-for-12) in four games last week with one double and three RBI, while junior second baseman Conner Hale batted .357 (5-for-14) in four games with one double, two RBI and two runs … Hale and all-American sophomore shortstop Alex Bregman are the Tigers’ leading hitters on the year, each with a .409 cumulative average … freshman outfielder Jake Fraley belted his first collegiate home run in Sunday’s win over Texas Southern, a three-run blast in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference in the 4-1 victory … freshman right-hander Parker Bugg has recorded seven strikeouts in three innings of relief work (three appearances) … Bugg has allowed just one hit with no walks, and he has one save to his credit.
