Swimmer Kopcso Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BATON ROUGE— The Southeastern Conference has named LSU freshman swimmer Kara Kopcso the SEC Female Freshman of the Week following her debut this past weekend against Georgia and Arkansas.

Kopcso won a pair of events against Georgia and Arkansas, the only wins for an LSU swimmer, male or female, over the weekend. She was first in the 200 fly (1:59.06) versus Georgia and won the same event later in the weekend against Arkansas in 2:01.00. She also produced two third-place finishes in the 100 fly and 200 IM against the Razorbacks.

It’s a great honor for Kara,” LSU swimming coach Dave Geyer said. Coming into her freshmen year she has very high expectations of herself.  To put nerves aside and throw down a time like that against Georgia is a true sign of her grit.   We are a long way from qualifying for NCAA’s but she definitely took a great first step in that process.

The Mandeville, La., native holds the state record in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM. She is also a seven-time individual state champion and four-time metro swimmer of the year.

The Lady Tigers take on Tulane Friday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m. in the LSU Natatorium.
