BATON ROUGE – Senior quarterback Zach Mettenberger has been named the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in LSU’s 59-26 win over Mississippi State on Saturday in Starkville.
Mettenberger completed 25-of-29 passes for 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns as LSU racked up 563 yards of total offense in the win. The 59 points were the most by an LSU team in a league game since scoring 63 in a win over Kentucky in 1997.
Mettenberger’s 25 completions were a career high and the most by an LSU quarterback since Rohan Davey completed 31 passes in the 2002 Sugar Bowl win over Illinois. Mettenberger also became just the fifth player in LSU history, and the first since Matt Flynn in 2007, to throw for 300 yards in back-to-back games.
Through six games, Mettenberger has thrown for 1,738 yard and 15 touchdowns in leading an LSU offense that is averaging 45.5 points and 488.8 total yards per game. LSU has scored 30 or more points in all six games, a first in school history, and they’ve also reached the 400-yard mark in total offense in all six contests, another LSU first.
