Two Tigers Advance to IAAF 100 Meter Semifinal

MOSCOW, Russia – Two former Tigers were among those advancing to the semifinal round of the men’s 100-meter dash in Saturday’s opener at the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics as Trinidad & Tobago’s Richard Thompson and Zimbabwe’s Gabriel Mvumvure will return to action on Sunday afternoon at Luzhniki Stadium.

Mvumvure was the first LSU athlete to step onto the track at this year’s World Championships as he sprinted to the finish line in 10.28 seconds (-0.2) for third place in the first qualifying heat.

Thompson followed by running a new 2013 seasonal best of 10.14 (-0.2) for second place in the fourth heat as each were automatic qualifiers into the semifinals with top-three finishes in their heats. Thompson ended the day as the 11th-fastest qualifier of the opening round, while Mvumvure was the 23rd-fastest qualifier for the semifinal round.

Both former Tigers will line up in the same semifinal heat as Mvumvure has drawn lane No. 3 and Thompson has drawn lane No. 6 in the first of three heats scheduled to run on Sunday at 10:05 a.m. CT.
