BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU second baseman JaCoby Jones, first baseman Mason Katz and righthanded pitchers Nick Rumbelow and Will LaMarche have been selected during Day 2 of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft Friday afternoon.
Additionally, two-sport national champion Chad Jones, who was injured in a car accident after being selected by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, was taken in the ninth round of the MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. The hard throwing – and hard hitting – lefty was unable to return to the football field after a gruesome injury to his left leg and recently decided to focus on professional baseball.
JaCoby Jones, a junior from Richton, Miss, was chosen in the third round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Katz, a senior from Harahan, La., was selected in the fourth round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Rumbelow, a junior from Bullard, Texas, was selected in the seventh round by the New York Yankees. LaMarche, a junior college transfer from Pleasanton, Calif., was selected in the ninth round by the Detroit Tigers.
JaCoby Jones, a 2013 second-team all-SEC selection, is hitting .283 this season for the Tigers with 10 doubles, five homers, 29 RBI and 12 stolen bases.
Katz, a 2013 second-team all-America and first-team all-SEC selection, is batting .378 with 14 doubles, two triples, 15 homers and 68 RBI.
JaCoby Jones was selected out of high school in the 19th round of the 2010 draft by Houston and significantly improved his draft status during his LSU career.
Katz went from being undrafted out of high school and undrafted after his junior season at LSU to becoming the Cardinals’ fourth-round selection.
LSU junior right-hander Ryan Eades was selected in the second round Thursday night by the Minnesota Twins.
Rounds 3-10 of the MLB Draft will be completed on Friday. The draft concludes on Saturday with Rounds 11-40.
