Notes on the Tigers
LSU began its season with a 1-2 mark at the 26 West Longhorns Classic. The Tigers dropped a pair of decisions to No. 2 Texas and No. 19 San Diego before picking up a sweep of Cal Poly to conclude opening weekend. In her first weekend as a six-rotation player, Desiree Elliott posted a solid all-around effort with 3.33 kills, 0.89 blocks and 0.78 digs per set en route to All-Tournament Team accolades. Madie Jones collected 3.11 kills, 0.56 digs and 0.44 blocks per set. Both Elliott and Jones are ranked among the SEC’s Top 15 in kills per set. Cati Leak also posted a strong opening weekend in her debut with the Tigers. She added 11 kills and 15 digs during LSU’s victory over Cal Poly. On the defensive side, Khourni Fears notched a team-leading 1.11 blocks per set highlighted by a six-stuff effort versus No. 19 San Diego. Meghan Mannari, fresh of her summer experience with the USA Volleyball A2 program, captured 38 digs at a 4.22 per set average to rank 10th among the SEC leaders. LSU continues its challenging non-conference slate versus Rice [Friday – 10 a.m.], No. 12 Washington [Friday – 7 p.m.] and No. 7 Purdue [Saturday – 1 p.m.]. The Tiger Classic has been moved to Houston, Texas and Rice University due to Hurricane Isaac and the travel schedules of the participating teams.
