BATON ROUGE – LSU’s rising sophomore Myles Lewis blistered Money Hill Golf & Country Club in Abita Springs, La., with rounds of 3-under par 69 and 5-under par 67 during a sectional qualifier held July 30 to become the fifth Tiger golfer to qualify for the 112th United States Amateur Championship.
Lewis followed a 3-under 69 in the morning round with a 5-under 67 in the afternoon to capture a second-place finish in the field of 48 golfers with his 36-hole score of 8-under par 136.
Lewis finished just one shot off the pace set by Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Grady Brame after the Lion standout won medalist honors by one shot with his two-round score of 9-under 135.
A New Orleans native, Lewis was steady in 36 holes of competition as he carded 11 birdies along with his three bogeys to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship for the first time in his amateur career.
“I played great, hit the ball fantastic,” Lewis said of his performance. “I didn’t get in any trouble with just three bogeys in 36 holes. I guess the big thing was I made putts. I’ve been putting a lot better this summer and can probably count on one hand the number of three-putts I’ve had playing (in the summer). I think in the spring I put a lot of pressure on myself. But it’s been a good summer.”
The 112th U.S. Amateur Championship is slated to run Aug. 13-19 as Cherry Hills Country Club will play host to the nation’s premier amateur event sponsored by the United States Golf Association.
Lewis will join four of his teammates in their trip to Cherry Hills Village, Colo., as rising junior Andrew Presley, rising sophomores Stewart Jolly and Curtis Thompson and incoming freshman Zach Wright have also earned their spot in the field for this year’s U.S. Amateur.
