BATON ROUGE – The Tigers added a fourth member of their roster heading to Cherry Hills Village, Colo., for the 112th United States Amateur Championship after rising sophomore Curtis Thompson earned a second-place finish on Thursday in the sectional qualifier held at Orlando’s Waldorf Astoria Golf Club.

Thompson followed an even-par 72 in Wednesday’s first round with a 1-over par 73 in Thursday’s second round for a 36-hole score of 1-over par 145 at the difficult par-72 course.

Ridge Community (Davenport, Fla.) High School sophomore Sam Horsfield finished four strokes clear of Thompson with a winning score of 3-under par 141 for the medalist honors. Matthew Chamberlain of Windermere, Fla., grabbed the third and final qualifying spot with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 147.

The 112th U.S. Amateur Championship is slated to run Aug. 13-19 as Cherry Hills Country Club will play host to the nation’s premier amateur event sponsored by the United States Golf Association.

A native of Coral Springs, Fla., Thompson is ready to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship for the first time in his amateur career as he joins the Tiger trio of rising junior Andrew Presley, rising sophomore Stewart Jolly and incoming freshman Zach Wright in the nation’s premier amateur event. Presley is making his second career appearance at the U.S. Amateur, while both Jolly and Wright debut in the event along with Thompson next month.
