Volleyball’s Purple & Gold Scrimmage on Aug. 18

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team will hold its annual Purple & Gold Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 4:30 p.m. as announced Thursday by head coach Fran Flory.

Admission to the scrimmage and all 2012 home matches at the Maravich Center are free compliments of The Advocate’s “Geaux Free” program.

Leading into the scrimmage, the defending seven-time SEC Western Division champions will instruct basic volleyball skills starting at 2 p.m. during a free kid’s clinic. The clinic is open to all children eighth grade and under. To reserve your spot, contact Lauren at promotions@lsu.edu by Wednesday, August 15 and include how many children will be attending the event.

In addition, fans will have the opportunity to get their 2012 LSU volleyball poster autographed by the players and coaching staff.

“Getting the opportunity to teach the game of volleyball and interact with our young fans at the Purple and Gold Scrimmage is something our team looks forward to every year,” Flory said. “Our matches provide great family entertainment and an atmosphere where everyone can show their true Tiger spirit.”

LSU has collected a 159-55 record and is one of only 25 programs to qualify for six of the last seven NCAA Tournaments dating back to the 2005 season. The seven straight SEC Western Division titles is the second longest streak in SEC history only behind Florida’s 14-year on top of the SEC’s Eastern Division from 1995-2008.

LSU opens up the home portion of its 2012 season by welcoming an elite field to the Tiger Classic on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The Tigers face Rice (Aug. 31 – 10 a.m.) along with NCAA Tournament participants Washington (Aug. 31 – 7 p.m.) and Purdue (Sept. 1 – 1 p.m.).
