BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Stewart Jolly will kick off his sophomore season with a trip to Cherry Hills Village, Colo., as he became the third Tiger to qualify for the 112th United States Amateur Championship as the event will be held Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club.
Jolly tied for medalist honors for Tuesday’s U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss., as he was one of three golfers to earn their spot in the field.
He fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 70 for his 36-hole score of 4-under par 140 to tie Mississippi State’s Barrett Edens for the top spot in the field of 46 U.S. Amateur hopefuls. South Carolina sophomore Blaine Woodruff grabbed the third qualifying spot with his score of 3-under par 141.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Jolly is set to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship for the first time in his amateur career as he joins a pair of his teammates in rising junior Andrew Presley and incoming freshman Zach Wright in the field for the nation’s premier amateur championship. It’s the longest running amateur championship sponsored by the United States Golf Association.
