BATON ROUGE – The ninth-ranked LSU gymnastics team continued preparation for NCAA Regional competition with a spirited practice Friday afternoon inside the gymnastics practice facility in Carl Maddox Field House.
Normally the Tigers would be gearing up for a meet on a Friday, but with a weekend off between the SEC Championship and the NCAA Seattle Regional, the team split into two and competed against each other during practice.
Head coach D-D Breaux divided the team and had both squads compete in the rotation order that LSU will see at the regional, starting on floor and moving to vault, bars and beam.
“It was a very good team competition in a practice setting,” Breaux said. “They competed against each other, which created a pressure situation because each side wanted to win.”
After competing for 12 straight weeks, the team utilized the added time between meets to hold lighter practices in an attempt to recuperate before the regional.
“We did a lot to make it a great practice session, and we were able to do it in less than two hours,” Breaux said. “That’s what we want to do right now. We want to get in and out because the least amount of time you can spend in the gym working them hard, the better off you are.”
LSU will take Saturday off before returning to the gym for a light practice session Sunday.
The Tigers will compete for a top-two finish at the Seattle Regional April 7 at 6 p.m. CT, facing off against Alabama, Arizona, Washington, Iowa and Central Michigan.
