BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s golf alum John Peterson is certainly off to a fast start in his PGA Tour career while making the cut in each of his two appearances in recent weeks, including the Mayakoba Golf Classic held this past weekend at El Camaleon in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Peterson finished in a tie for 55th place overall in a field of 132 players at the Mayakoba Golf Classic over the weekend with his score of 1-over par 285 in the 72-hole championship.
After opening the tournament with a score of 2-over par 73 in Thursday’s first round, Peterson carded a 2-over 72 in Friday’s second round to finish on the cutline with a 36-hole score of 3-over 145. He then fired scores of 1-over 72 in the third round Saturday and a PGA Tour career best 3-under 68 in the fourth round Sunday to move into a tie for 55th place on the final leaderboard at 1-over 285 for the weekend.
Peterson made his first career PGA Tour cut two weeks ago at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am held Feb. 9-12 at the Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
That’s where Peterson carded rounds of 2-under 70 in the first round at Spyglass Hill Golf Club, a 5-over 75 in the second round at Monterey Peninsula Country Club and a 3-under 69 in the third round at Pebble Beach Golf Links in the third round. Because of the Pro-Am format, Peterson did not play the final round at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am after finishing outside the top 60.
Peterson has collected a total of $20,586 in earnings while securing sponsors’ exemptions to appear in his first two PGA Tour events as a professional. He has also posted an impressive scoring average of 71.3 strokes per round in seven rounds played on the PGA Tour to this point of the 2012 season.
