Notes on the Tigers
The LSU volleyball team overcame a two-set deficit for the second time in 2011 to emerge with a 3-2 victory Sunday over South Carolina. The Tigers dropped a four-set decision to No. 19 Florida Friday on Senior Night. With three matches remaining in the regular season, LSU carries a one-match edge over Arkansas in the SEC Western Division race. Madie Jones continued her strong offensive play and racked up 36 kills at a 4.00 per set average. She cranked a career-high 23 kills verses South Carolina and posted a team-best 13 kills during the Florida match. The Plano, Texas, native has taken over the team lead with 3.56 kills per set to rank sixth in the SEC. In the middle, Desiree Elliott and Michele Williams posted 24 kills apiece at a 2.67 per set ratio. Elliott has run her streak to 10 consecutive matches with double figure kills. She also has been a force on the defensive end and racked up 30 blocks during her last five outings. Williams was involved in three consecutive blocks during the early portions of the fifth set against South Carolina as LSU won the deciding frame going away, 15-6. Malorie Pardo compiled her team-leading 11th double-double of the season, 56 assists and 12 digs, versus the Gamecocks. She has eclipsed 40 assists in nine of her last 10 efforts. Meghan Mannari led LSU’s back row with a pair of remarkable performances. She corralled a career-best 39 digs against South Carolina, the most by a SEC player in 2011. The 39 scoops also were the second-highest output in program history for a single match only behind former All-American Elena Martinez’s 43 digs at Alabama during the 2007 season. Victoria Jacobsen also tallied a career-best nine digs versus the Gamecocks. LSU faces its toughest road swing of the season with back-to-back tilts versus SEC heavyweights No. 18 Kentucky [Friday at 6 p.m. CT] and No. 15 Tennessee [Sunday at 1 p.m. CT, televised by CST/CSS].
