BATON ROUGE — LSU junior Sara Haley was named SEC Female Swimmer of the Week and senior Matt Vieke was named SEC Male Diver of the Week, as released by the conference office on Tuesday.
Haley, named SEC Female Swimmer of the Week for the second consecutive week, led the Lady Tigers over the weekend in individual competition in losses to Florida State (179-116) and Florida (171-122). For the season, the El Dorado Hills, Calif. native has touched the wall first in the 200 free, 500 free, 100 fly and 200 fly while playing a key part in both the freestyle and medley relays.
After posting a first-place finish against Florida State in the 200 fly (1:59.07) on Oct. 14, Haley scored a pair of victories in the 200 free (1:49.47) and the 100 fly (55.09) against Florida the following day.
Vieke contributed positively for Tigers in the team’s narrow loss over the weekend to Florida State (161-139). He scored a 317.77 on the one-meter springboard and 340.65 on the three-meter, which put him in second and third, respectively, in the team’s lost against Florida (185-115) the following day.
Entering his final campaign, Vieke looks to end his LSU career as an SEC and NCAA point scorer. Last season Vieke registered career-high scores in all three events and proved to be LSU’s top performer at the NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Regional.
Vieke earned the first alternate position to the NCAA Championships with a sixth-place finish in the one-meter (661.40) at NCAA Zone ‘D’ Diving Regionals and also recorded 10th in the three-meter with a combined score of 657.20.
The LSU men will host SEC foe Auburn on Friday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at the LSU Natatorium. Admission all LSU Swimming and Diving dual meets is free.
