BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s tennis players Hayley Everett and Paige Bahnsen scored a victory in doubles over TCU’s Gabbi Fernandez and Molly Welsch on day one of the Stephen F. Austin Fall Invitational Friday in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The victory came after both lost in their first singles match of the tournament.
Everett and Bahnsen won the Gray Consolation Flight in their first tournament together as a doubles tandem two weeks ago at the Gopher Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota. The win was the third straight for the pair this fall.
Senior Olivia Howlett travels to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for day one of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Pre-Qualifying Saturday.
Senior Whitney Wolf, the No. 52 ranked player in the initial 2011 ITA rankings, begins qualifying play in Pacific Palisades on Tuesday.
LSU head coach Tony Minnis will travel to California and assistant coach Lisa Jackson is coaching in Texas.
“This is a great opportunity for our girls to face some great competition,” Minnis said. “Hopefully they can get some wins under their belt to build momentum as we go into the rest of the fall season.”
Play resumes at the SFA Fall Invitational on Saturday at 9 a.m. CDT with Everett and Bahnsen taking on Vivian ten Dolle and Melanie Urvoy of Louisiana Tech in the B Doubles second round.
In singles, Everett will face TCU’s Fernandez and Bahnsen will play TCU’s Molly Welsh.
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the girls bounce back tomorrow after a tough day in singles,” Jackson said.
In California, Howlett takes on Akron’s Zara Harutyunyan in first round action getting under way at 9:30 a.m. CDT.
