Lyons, Gutgsell Leads Golfers at Squire Creek

BATON ROUGE – For the second-straight season, Tiger sophomore Landon Lyons finished among the Top 10 of the final leaderboard at the Squire Creek Invitational to lead a group of LSU individuals teeing it up in the 54-hole event held at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La.

Lyons fired an even-par score of 216 in three rounds to finish in a tie for ninth place in the final standings after earning a fourth-place finish at the Squire Creek Invitational in his collegiate debut in 2010.

After opening the championship with scores of 2-under 70 in the first round and even-par 72 in the second round on Monday, Lyons closed out the event with a 2-over 74 in Tuesday’s final round to finish eight off the pace for the individual title. That performance also improved upon his 54-hole score of 2-over par 218 in the event en route to a top-five finish a season ago.

Senior Austin Gutgsell nearly earned a top-10 finish of his own as he finished one shot behind Lyons with a tie for 11th place on the leaderboard at 1-over 217 for the championship. Gutgsell sandwiched rounds of 2-under 70 in the first round and 1-under 71 in the third round around a 4-over 76 in the second round for a final score of 1-over 217 in 54 holes of competition at the par-72 layout.

Freshman Stewart Jolly picked up his first career top-20 finish in his first 54-hole event after tying for 19th place overall at 5-over par 221. Jolly’s performance this week includes matching rounds of even-par 72 in the first and third rounds, along with a 5-over 77 in the second round en route to the Top 20.

Sophomore Smylie Kaufman posted scores of 4-over 76, 1-over 73 and 3-over 75 to finish in a tie for 32nd place with a cumulative 54-hole score of 8-over 224 for the championship.

The Tigers return to action next week as they travel to Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio, while teeing off in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational hosted by Ohio State on Monday and Tuesday. Following their trip to Ohio, the Tigers will play host to the third-annual David Toms Intercollegiate in Shreveport, La., at Southern Trace Country Club on Oct. 17-18.
