BATON ROUGE – The LSU Tiger Girls participated Saturday morning in the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge Women Build 2011 with more than a dozen other women of the Baton Rouge area.

The team helped construct the frame of a house in a neighborhood off Gardere Lane and performed tasks ranging from building the framework of the house to installing the siding on the exterior of the house.

The women volunteered on the first day of construction, starting at 7:30 a.m. with a concrete slab.  The volunteers wrapped up construction around 2 p.m. with almost the entire frame of the house completed.  The Women’s Build will continue construction on the house over the course of 10 weeks with volunteer days every Saturday.

Tiger Girl officer Michelle Douglas expressed how rewarding the experience was and explained why it was important for the team to contribute.

“I wanted the team to participate in a Habitat build because it is a great way to give back to the community in such a personal way,” said Douglas.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Baton Rouge works in partnership with the community and deserving, low-income families to build affordable homes in an effort to eliminate poverty housing.

The house the ladies worked on is the future home of Rhonda Hardnett.  Hardnett will be living in the home with her daughter and five grandchildren.  The team witnessed the future homeowner hammer the first nail into the beginnings of her new home.

“It was an amazing experience.  We worked alongside Ms. Rhonda to build not only a house, but a home for her and her family,” said Douglas.
