Soccer’s Isom Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

BATON ROUGE – The LSU soccer team features the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row as senior goalkeeper and team captain Mo Isom was picked on Monday as the league’s top defensive performer for the third time in her collegiate career.

Following her effort in a 1-0 shutout of McNeese State on Friday night, Isom joins redshirt freshman Jodi Calloway as the SEC Defensive Player of the Week after Calloway was honored on Sept. 12.

Isom made four saves against the Cowgirls as she pitched her third shutout of the year while helping LSU extend its unbeaten streak to four-straight games. She made the defensive play of the game with only nine seconds remaining in the contest to preserve the shutout with a diving save to her right on a 25-yard strike by McNeese State defender Amanda Denton that seemed destined for the top left corner of the net. With a quick reaction, Isom punched the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick as time expired.

With the win, Isom also earned the 25th clean sheet of her collegiate career to move into a tie for the No. 7 spot on the SEC’s all-time career list with former Vanderbilt goalkeepers Christy Barringer (1993-95) and Tyler Griffin (2004-06). She also slashed her SEC-leading goals against average this season to 0.43, while allowing just three goals in nearly 623 minutes of action.

Monday’s selection marks the first time since her freshman season that Isom has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week as she earned a pair of selections on Sept. 2 and Sept. 22 in 2008.
