It’s GameDay: Saturday Night in Tiger Stadium

BATON ROUGE – Second-ranked LSU will put the nation’s longest regular-season non-conference winning streak on the line Saturday when the Tigers host Northwestern State at 7 p.m. in Tiger Stadium.

It will be the first meeting between the two teams since 1942 when the Tigers won in Tiger Stadium, 40-0. The game will also serve as a homecoming for Northwestern State head coach Bradley Dale Peveto, who served as an assistant on Les Miles‘ LSU staff from 2005-08, helping the Tigers to the national title in 2007.

Saturday’s game will be televised on TigerVision, LSU’s pay-per-view network, and will be broadcast on the LSU Sports Radio Network with Jim Hawthorne, Doug Moreau, and Gordy Rush handling the call.

“We have by no means hung the moon and we aren’t close to being a finished product,” Miles said. “Our team understands that we have to improve each week to get to where we want to be. I liked the way we played last week against Oregon. We need to bring that same intensity to the field on Saturday night against Northwestern State.

“We’ve had a good week of preparation. We are expecting a hard fought game from Northwestern State and I know that Bradley Dale with have them ready to come in here and play at a very high level.”

Northwestern State, members of the Football Championship Subdivision and the Southland Conference, enters the game with a 1-0 record following a 24-23 victory over Delta State to open the year.

Offensively, LSU will continue to rely on the running of sophomores Spencer Ware and Michael Ford. The duo combined for 195 yards and three touchdowns against Oregon with Ware leading the way with 98 yards and a score.

Senior Jarrett Lee will be making his first Tiger Stadium start since November 14, 2009 when he led the Tigers to a 24-16 victory over Louisiana Tech. Lee, who is 6-4 as a starter, connected on 10-of-22 passes last week for 98 yards and a touchdown. His top target a week ago was tight end Deangelo Peterson, who hauled in four passes for 62 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers will look to continue to pressure the football and force turnovers. Against Oregon, LSU created four turnovers (three fumbles, one interception) that resulted in 20 points for the Tigers. As a unit, the LSU defense limited Oregon to just 335 total yards with 98 of those coming on the ground.

Sophomore defensive back Tyrann Mathieu earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week and Thorpe Award Defensive Back of the Week for his performance in the win over the Ducks.

Mathieu led the Tigers with 10 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, broke up two passes and scored a touchdown a week ago.

Other defensive standouts in the opener for the Tigers included safety Brandon Taylor with nine tackles, cornerback Tharold Simon with eight tackles, three pass breakups and an interception and defensive end Sam Montgomery with four tackles, including 1.5 for losses.

Following Saturday, the Tigers will have a short week to prepare for Mississippi State as LSU travels to Starkville to face the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
