Golfer Peterson Set for Third Try at US Amateur

BATON ROUGE – While preparing to wrap up his amateur career and embark on a new career as a professional golfer, former LSU standout and 2011 NCAA individual champion John Peterson will tee off at the 111th United States Amateur Championship beginning Monday at Erin Hills Golf Club in Erin, Wis.

Peterson is set to make his third career appearance at the U.S. Amateur as he also competed in the premier amateur championship held each year in the United States in 2009 and 2010. He will compete in the event as he awaits a potential invitation to the U.S. Walker Cup Team to wrap up his amateur career.

The 111th edition of the most prestigious amateur event sponsored by the United States Golf Association is set to run through Aug. 28 with the field being cut to 64 following two rounds of stroke play. Those who make the cut will then compete against one another in six rounds of single-elimination match play to determine who will take home the Havemeyer Trophy as this year’s U.S. Amateur champion.

The field will play one round of stroke play at both Erin Hills Golf Club and Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Erin, Wis., while Erin Hills will play host to the match play tournament.

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Peterson has enjoyed a level of success in his two previous appearances at the U.S. Amateur as he earned the No. 53 seed in the first round of the match play competition for his first start in 2009 and nearly advanced to match play again in 2010 by tying for 65th place in the two rounds of qualifying in stroke play. He is now set to make his third-straight start in the event.

Peterson will play Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Monday’s first round of stroke play as he is set to tee off at 12:55 p.m. CDT on the front nine. He will then play Erin Hills Golf Club in the second round on Tuesday as he is slated to tee off from the back nine beginning at 7:40 a.m.
