BATON ROUGE – An early morning shower and afternoon heat chased LSU indoors for both of its practice sessions on Friday as the Tigers continue to prepare for the season-opener against third-ranked Oregon.
Following Friday’s two-a-day, LSU has now gone through 12 workouts since preseason training last week. LSU will hold its first full-scale scrimmage of camp on Saturday morning in Tiger Stadium.
“I like the progress the team has made going into our first scrimmage tomorrow,” head coach Les Miles said following Friday’s afternoon workout. “We had a two-a-day practice today and all three phases of the game are rounding into shape nicely.
“It’s been a very good start of camp. Improvement needs to be made; we’re not ready to play yet but we’re taking the strides we need to take. It’s about three weeks and a day until our first game. We’ll look at our team in a game situation during tomorrow’s scrimmage. I like the position we’re in now 12 practices into camp.”
Miles said Saturday’s scrimmage will consist of about 75 to 80 plays with 40 of the snaps being “live”. The remaining snaps will “thud” (no tackling to the ground) in nature. Miles said the scrimmage will also have the No. 1 offense going against the No. 1 defense for a portion of the snaps.
LSU is also expected to work on all phases of special teams tomorrow.
Miles praised senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson after practice on Friday saying “he’s had a very good camp and his passing is much improved.”
In addition to the scrimmage on Saturday, the Tigers will take part in the annual Fan Day scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. on campus at the Maravich Center and the Maddox Field House. The doors open at 3 p.m. and the football team and coaching staff will sign autographs and meet fans from 4 to 6 p.m.
The Tigers will take Sunday off before returning to practice on Monday with workouts in the morning and afternoon.
