Rodrigue Unveils ‘A Number One Tiger Fan’ Painting

Print to benefit Tiger Athletic Foundation, LSU Museum of Art and George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts

BATON ROUGE – From July 23 to Sept. 18, the LSU Museum of Art, or LSU MOA, in Baton Rouge will host “Blue Dogs and Cajuns on the River: George Rodrigue from the New Orleans Museum of Art and Other Collections,” an exhibition highlighting the progression of George Rodrigue’s 40-year career. The exhibition features Rodrigue’s Blue Dog paintings from a statewide traveling exhibition organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, as well as additional works from the artist’s personal archives and local private collections.

To commemorate this upcoming exhibit, Rodrigue unveiled a new original painting and silkscreen print of an LSU-clad Blue Dog, titled “A Number One Tiger Fan,” at a press conference and reception on June 6 at the LSU MOA.

The print will be available for sale online at www.arts4education.org, by phone at 1-800-716-8335 and in-person at the LSU MOA Museum Store located in the Shaw Center for the Arts. Proceeds from sales of the print benefit the Tiger Athletic Foundation, or TAF; LSU MOA; George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, or GRFA; and LSU. The campaign ends Jan. 1, 2012.

Together, TAF and George Rodrigue raised more than $1 million in 2003 to build LSU mascot Mike the Tiger a new habitat. Following that success, the foundations now join efforts with LSU Museum of Art to promote and assist the arts and education in Louisiana.

TAF is a private, non-profit corporation dedicated to supporting LSU and its Athletic Program.

LSU MOA collects, conserves, exhibits and interprets the fine and decorative arts entrusted to its care and stewardship, providing opportunities for research, education and enjoyment to students, scholars and visitors. For more information about the exhibit, visit www.lsumoa.com.

Founded in 2009, GRFA advocates the importance of the visual arts in the development of our youth. Programs include an annual arts scholarship contest, art supplies for Louisiana schools through “George’s Art Closet,” free lesson plans, school visits, art therapy and more.  For more information, visit www.georgerodriguefoundation.org.
