Softball Places Three on NCAA All-Regional Team

BATON ROUGE – LSU softball’s Rachele Fico, Ashley Langoni and Brittany Mack were selected to the NCAA College Station All-Regional Team Tuesday as announced by the host site Texas A&M. It’s the second career regional honor for Fico and Langoni.

Fico, a member of the 2010 NCAA Baton Rouge All-Regional Team, racked up a memorable 18 strikeouts over 11 innings during her lone appearance Friday against Syracuse. She picked up at least one strikeout in nine of her 11 frames of action. The  18 Ks was the second-highest single-game effort in program history only behind former three-time All-American Britni Sneed‘s 19-strikeout performance against Oklahoma at the 2001 NCAA Women’s College World Series.

Langoni, a 2009 NCAA Tempe All-Regional pick, paced the offense with a .438 batting average, a home run and 4 RBIs. She produced a trio of multi-hit efforts highlighted by 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs during Saturday’s elimination tilt with Syracuse. Her RBI triple in the first inning put the Tigers on the board and she followed with a two-run dinger in the fifth inning.

Pitching in her first NCAA postseason, Mack was dominant with back-to-back double figure strikeout appearances during a pair of elimination victories over Sacred Heart and Syracuse before being dealt a tough-luck loss to Texas A&M. The junior right-hander was touched up for only a pair of infield singles against Sacred Heart and earned her 20th victory of the season versus Syracuse. She was on the verge of one-hitter and retired 14 straight Texas A&M batters before Meagan May knocked a solo home run to open the seventh inning. For the weekend, Mack claimed 28 strikeouts over her 21 frames of action.

LSU wrapped up the final season of the legendary career of National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Louisiana Hall of Fame coach Yvette Girouard with a 40-18 record. It marked the 13th time in 15 seasons that the Tigers finished with at least 40 victories since softball was reinstated in 1997.
