LAKE CHARLES, La. — LSU’s John Peterson and Megan McChrystal have been named the 2011 Louisiana collegiate golfers of the year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Also, Tiger men’s coach Chuck Winstead and women’s coach Karen Bahnsen have been named the top coaches in the state.

Joining Peterson, who was named to the first team for the third straight year, on the men’s first team are two-time first team selections Phillip Westerman of Southeastern Louisiana, Andrew Loupe of LSU and Philipp Fendt of Louisiana-Lafayette along with rookie Gustaf Kocken of ULM.

Second team members include Cedric Scotto of Southeastern Louisiana, Ken Looper of LSU, Greg Berthelot of Centenary, Andrew Noto of Louisiana-Lafayette and Clinton Shepard of Louisiana Tech.

Only one women’s team was selected and joining three time first team selection Megan McChrystal of LSU were teammates Austin Ernst and Jacqueline Hedwall along with Maribel Lopez Porras, Janine Fellows and Ashley McKenney of Tulane.

Other special awards for the men had Kocken being named freshman of the year while Ernst was the women’s freshman of the year and Megan Chapman of Tulane the newcomer of the year.

Peterson posted a 71.55 scoring average for LSU this past season, earned first team all-SEC honors and was the runnerup at the SEC tournament, bowing out in a sudden death playoff after tying for honors. He was the No. 21 ranked collegiate player in the nation.

McChrystal averaged 71.9 strokes per round, won the NCAA fall preview tournament and had six top five finishes in eight events. She was a first team all-SEC pick, her third such honor.

Winstead, who won coach of the year honors for the third straight season, coached LSU to a No. 8 national ranking during the year and to four tournament titles as well as to a fifth place finish at the SEC tournament.

Bahnsen led the Lady Tigers to a third place showing in the SEC tournament, to the championship in the Mason Rudolph Invitational and to second place efforts in three other events. The team made it to the NCAA regionals for the eighth straight year.
