BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU centerfielder Simone Heyward secured SEC Freshman of the Week honors Monday as announced by the league office. It marks the first weekly award for Heyward from the SEC.
Heyward sparked the LSU lineup from the leadoff position and posted an impressive .700 on-base percentage during the Tigers sweep of South Carolina to wrap up the regular season. She drew five walks, scored four runs and added two stolen bases. The Sacramento, Calif., native crossed the plate in all three games of the series as LSU improved to 23-2 this season when Heyward scores a run.
LSU carries a league-high 12 game winning streak into this week’s SEC Tournament hosted by Ole Miss. The Tigers face off with No. 7 Georgia in the quarterfinals Thursday at 4 p.m. on ESPNU.
