AWENDAW, S.C. – After firing an even-par score of 284 in Monday’s second round at Bulls Bay Golf Club, the No. 12-ranked LSU men’s golf team has put itself in a position to defend its team championship at the seventh-annual Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate as the Tigers trail Augusta State by two shots on the leaderboard heading into Tuesday’s final round.
The No. 6-ranked Jaguars of Augusta State have fired consecutive rounds of 3-under 281 and 2-under 282 for a 36-hole score of 5-under 565 to take a two-stroke lead over the Tigers after two rounds. Wake Forest follows in third place at even-par 568 for this year’s championship.
Rounding out the top five in the race for the team championship are No. 11-ranked Auburn in fourth place at 1-over 569 and No. 7-ranked Texas A&M in fifth place at 2-over 570.
The Tigers continue to be led by a pair of senior All-Americans as Andrew Loupe and John Peterson have fired matching scores of 3-under 139 through two rounds of play to finish the afternoon in a five-way tie for fourth place on the leaderboard. Loupe fired LSU’s lowest round of the afternoon at 2-under 69, while Peterson followed with an impressive round of his own at even-par 71.
Each is looking to solidify his All-SEC and All-America status again this season as Peterson is seeking an impressive fifth top-10 finish in eight tournament appearances this season, while Loupe is in position with a fourth top-10 finish in eight tournament starts on his 2010-11 senior campaign.
The duo currently trails Ole Miss All-American Jonathan Randolph by two shots in the individual race for the championship as the Rebel standout has fired rounds of 68 and 69 for a total score of 5-under 137.
Juniors Austin Gutgsell and Sang Yi added matching rounds of 1-over 72 to LSU’s team total on Monday en route to a team score of even-par 284. Yi ended the afternoon in a tie for 29th place overall with a score of 3-over par 145 for the championship, while Gutgsell followed his teammate in a tie for 43rd place in the individual standings at 6-over par 148 through 36 holes.
After opening with a score of 1-under 70 in the first round, freshman Andrew Presley carded an 8-over 79 on Monday to finish the day in a tie for 48th place overall at 7-over 149.
The Tigers have earned the right to compete as part of the final group in the final round as they will begin from the front nine at 8:40 a.m. CDT alongside Augusta State and Wake Forest. Golfstat will provide live scoring of the final round, which can be found online at www.golfstat.com.
