BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – LSU freshman gymnast Sarie Morrison earned a spot on the All-Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Second Team and the All-SEC Freshman Team Wednesday after her performance at the SEC Championship Saturday night at the BJCC Arena.
All-SEC teams were based on finish at the SEC Championship. The individual event champions and the top three all-arounders were named First Team All-SEC, while the event runner-up(s) and next three all-arounders were named to the second team.
The top freshman finisher on each event and the top three all-arounders were named Freshman All-SEC.
Morrison posted a 9.90 on vault to tie for second place in the event, giving her Second Team All-SEC honors, and her vault score was also the highest of any freshman.
Morrison’s honor extended LSU’s streak to 10 straight years with at least one All-SEC gymnast, and she became the 29th LSU gymnast to earn All-SEC recognition. Since 1981, LSU has racked up 45 total All-SEC honors.
It is the second straight year that LSU’s All-SEC honors have come on vault as 2010 senior Susan Jackson captured the vault title and junior Gloria Johnson placed second.
Morrison also became the first LSU gymnast to earn Freshman All-SEC honors since April Burkholder received the honor in 2003.
LSU will open up NCAA postseason competition at the Athens Regional in Georgia on April 2. The Tigers earned the three seed and will take on No. 1 seed UCLA, two seed and host Georgia, North Carolina State, Maryland and West Virginia. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. CT, and live audio will be available in the Geaux Zone at www.LSUsports.net/live.
