COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – LSU’s Fran Flory has been selected as one of three head coaches for the U.S. Women’s National A2 Program as announced by USA Volleyball. She is joined by Ohio State’s Geoff Carlston and Dayton’s Kelly Sheffield to head the program.
Flory’s involvement with USA Volleyball marks the fourth consecutive year that LSU will be represented in the prestigious A2 program. Brittnee Cooper and Elena Martinez captured gold medals in 2008, while Cooper picked up a silver medal in 2009. Assistant coach Steve Loeswick earned a bronze medal in 2010.
“It’s an extreme honor and privilege to be chosen by USA Volleyball to coach in the A2 program,” Flory said. “Our players and staff have enjoyed a very positive experience in the past. The A2 program attracts the nation’s best collegiate volleyball players and coaches. I’m excited for the opportunity to work with this very distinguished and talented group.”
The U.S. Women’s National A2 Program will take place from May 23-June 1 in Dallas. A total of 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competition in the 2010 USA Volleyball Open National Championships in the Open Division from May 28-31.
The 36 players will be divided into three 12-player rosters for the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. USA Volleyball considers the event as the National Championship for the sport of volleyball in the United States.
USA Volleyball will announce the player selections for the U.S. Women’s National A2 Program later in the week. In addition, the full U.S. Women’s National A2 Program coaching and support staff for 2011 will be announced at that time.
LSU compiled a 25-5 record en route to its sixth straight SEC Western Division title last season. The Tigers also are one of only 18 programs nationally to qualify for the last six NCAA Tournaments dating back to the 2005 season.
