Women’s Swimming & Diving 18th in Final Poll

BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s swimming and diving team was ranked 18th in the final TYR/CSCAA national women’s poll of the dual-meet season Wednesday.

Following a fine showing at last month’s SEC Championships, the LSU women (13-4, 1-1 SEC) made the biggest jump of any team in the rankings as the squad was unranked in the previous poll.

The Lady Tigers earned fifth-place at the conference meet, their highest finish in the past 10 seasons. In addition, the squad sent 14 athletes to the medal podium with top-three event finishes and broke 12 program records at SEC’s.

Senior Jane Trepp headlined the team’s accomplishments as she shattered the conference record in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.94 seconds) and became the first Lady Tiger swimmer to win an SEC championship since 1997.

Trepp is one of nine swimmers who will be competing at the 2011 NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, from March 17-19, the largest women’s contingent traveling to the meet in at least 15 years.

Women’s divers Rebecca St. Germain and Elle Schmidt will attempt to qualify for the national meet at the Zone ‘D’ Diving Regional in Austin, beginning Friday.

LSU is one of six SEC programs ranked in the poll with conference champion Georgia earning the top spot and title of dual-meet national champions.
