Nominee for Player of the Week

Anissa Young, 1B, Jr., Fontana, Calif.
Young knocked a pair of critical hits en route to Tournament MVP honors at the Purple & Gold Challenge. The Fontana, Calif., native drove home the game-winning with a RBI single during the third inning of a 2-1 triumph over No. 12 Texas. She also belted a three-run homer, her sixth of the season, to provide LSU with some insurance runs during the sixth inning of a 4-0 victory over Pitt.

Nominee for Pitcher of the Week

Brittany Mack, P, Jr., Round Rock, Texas
Mack tossed a career-high nine innings and fired a two-hitter against Hofstra, a 2010 NCAA Tournament participant. She notched 11 strikeouts against zero walks and sat down the first 20 batters she faced to carry a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Mack was credited with the win during head coach Yvette Girouard‘s 500th victory at LSU.

Nominee for Freshman of the Week

Meghan Patterson, P, Fr., Destrehan, La. 
Patterson nearly tossed her second career no-hitter against Pittsburgh over the weekend at the Purple & Gold Challenge. The lone damage to Patterson was a bunt single during the seventh inning as the Destrehan native became the first freshman pitcher in program history to win her first five decisions of her career. She racked up eight strikeouts and retired 17 straight batters after a two-out walk in the first inning.

Notes on the Tigers
No. 21 LSU swept all three of its games during a rain-shortened Purple & Gold Challenge highlighted by a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Texas. In the process, head coach Yvette Girouard picked up her 500th victory with the Tigers after announcing her retirement following the 2011 season. The historic win was earned in dramatic fashion as freshmen Alex Boulet knocked a RBI single to break a scoreless tie in the ninth inning against Hofstra. Brittany Mack, Meghan Patterson, Tiffany Shaw and Anissa Young notched All-Tournament Team honors. Both Mack and Patterson carried no-hitters into the seventh inning against Hofstra and Pittsburgh, respectively. Young added a quartet of RBIs, including a three-run homer during the sixth inning against Pittsburgh and the go-ahead RBI single in the third inning versus No. 12 Texas. Shaw added a pair of multi-hit efforts en route to a 6-for-8 weekend with a two runs and two stolen bases from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The Tigers open SEC action with a Wednesday doubleheader against No. 2 Florida followed by a three-game set at No. 1 Georgia over the weekend.
