BATON ROUGE – In the wake of a outstanding weekend of competition at the 2011 SEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, both the Tigers and Lady Tigers continue to hold their No. 2 national rankings as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has published its latest power ranking.
This marks the third-straight week in which LSU has been ranked as the No. 2 program nationally in both the men’s and women’s USTFCCCA Top 25 power ranking.
The Tigers have actually locked down the No. 2 spot for the fifth-straight week after being ranked No.1 in the country in the second week of the regular season back on Jan. 25. They continue to trail No. 1 Florida, which captured the men’s team championships at the SEC Indoor meet this past weekend. The top five of the men’s power ranking has seen some shakeup this week with No. 3 Arkansas moving up two spots this week, No. 4 Indiana dropping one spot and No. 5 BYU entering the top five for the first time.
The Lady Tigers, who captured their 23rd SEC team championship all-time with a victory at the 2011 SEC Indoor Championships this past weekend, are ranked No. 2 nationally for the third week in a row after the team held the No. 3 position during the first four weeks of the season.
No. 1-ranked Oregon has held the top spot in the women’s power ranking for seven weeks in a row as the Ducks are the favorite to defend their NCAA Indoor team title. Rounding out the top five the latest power ranking are No. 3 Arkansas, No. 4 Texas and No. 5 Texas A&M.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will have one final opportunity to prepare for the national meet as they are set to host the LSU NCAA Indoor Qualifier on Friday at the Carl Maddox Field House.
The 2011 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships are set to run in two weeks from March 11-12 at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M in College Station. The women finished third and the men finished fourth in the NCAA Indoor team standings a season ago.
