BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Meghan Patterson and ULL’s Gabrielle Bridges notched the first Louisiana Sports Writers Association [LSWA] Softball Pitcher and Hitter of the Week awards of the 2011 season Tuesday as voted upon by the state’s sports information directors.
A freshman pitcher for the Tigers, Patterson burst onto the scene and went 2-0 with a paltry 0.54 ERA en route to a spot on the Wilson DeMarini Tiger Classic All-Tournament Team. She tossed a four-hit shutout and racked up 11 strikeouts against zero walks during her first career start against Bowling Green. The Destrehan native followed that up with another complete game and an 11 K performance versus Louisiana Tech.
A senior outfielder for the Cajuns, Bridges connected for seven home runs and an astounding 17 RBIs during her 20 plate appearances at the Louisiana Classics over the weekend. She also become the first ULL player to belt three homers in one game and drove home seven RBIs against Prairie View A&M. Earlier in the day versus Arkansas, Bridges ripped a pair of long balls for six RBIs.
It’s the first weekly award from the LSWA for both players.
