KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The LSU men’s tennis team continued its run through the back draws of the SEC Indoor Championships on Sunday as senior Sebastian Carlsson earned a spot in the consolation singles final and both doubles teams advanced to the finals of the consolation doubles bracket.
In the consolation round of 16, Carlsson knocked off Jarryd Chaplin of host Tennessee in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6, to land a spot in the quarterfinals. The Uppsala, Sweden, native then outlasted Tennesse’s Ed Jones for a 6-3, 3-6, (10-7) victory to seal his spot in the semifinals. However, due to forfeiture Carlsson will square off against Kentucky’s Brent Grant tomorrow in the final.
In the consolation doubles bracket, Carlsson teamed up with partner Neal Skupski and the duo made quick work of Alabama’s Danill Proskura and Ian Chadwell, 8-4, in the semifinals. The other Tiger tandem of Julien Gauthier and Stefan Szacinski also notched a semifinal victory in the doubles back draw, taking down Mississippi State’s Zach White and James Chaudry in a tight match, 9-8.
“The doubles teams just keep improving and I was very impressed with their performances today,” LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “Sebastian picked up two nice singles wins and he is looking forward to the tough challenge tomorrow.”
The consolation singles final between Carlsson and Grant will begin at 9 a.m. CDT, but the doubles final between the two LSU duos will not be played due to time and travel arrangements.
