BATON ROUGE — The LSU women’s tennis program has released its 2011 spring schedule, head coach Tony Minnis announced Wednesday.
Fans will have the opportunity to come out and support the Lady Tigers in 13 home matches at W.T. ‘Dub’ Robinson Stadium highlighted by visits from five programs that finished last season in the top 30 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national rankings. Admission to all home matches is free.
“Every year we try to play one of the top schedules in the country, and this year is no different,” Minnis said. “We have lots of great home matches and some tough road matches as well, which will prepare us for post-season play. It should be very exciting.”
LSU will open the spring season at the University of Virginia’s Winter Invitational on Jan. 15. Following the three-day tournament, the Lady Tigers will hold their home opener against Texas Tech and Prairie View A&M on Feb. 2.
The Lady Tigers will also welcome non-conference opponents Oklahoma State, Iowa, Tulsa and Colorado as well as in-state foes Grambling State and Southern to the ‘Dub’ this season.
LSU begins SEC play at home versus 2010 NCAA runner-up Florida on March 4. Fellow SEC Eastern Division squads South Carolina, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Kentucky will visit the Lady Tigers, while the team will travel to Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama and Arkansas.
Following the regular season, LSU will make the trek to Knoxville, Tenn., for the 2011 SEC Tournament, beginning April 21.
The NCAA first and second rounds will be held at campus sites, May 13-15, while the NCAA Team Championships begin May 19 in Palo Alto, Calif. The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will follow the team championships, beginning May 25.
