Notes on the Tigers
After a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Ole Miss on Sunday, LSU extended its lead to 2.5 matches in the SEC Western Division race. The Tigers [22-2, 13-2 SEC] have won five matches in a row and advanced to No. 15 in the latest edition of the AVCA Top 25 poll. LSU’s defensive effort was superb during its victory over the Rebels. Four players tallied 15 or more digs as the Tigers held Ole Miss to a miniscule .111 hitting percentage. Lauren Waclawczyk led the charge with 20 digs for her 11th consecutive double digit dig performance and reached the 20-scoop plateau for the sixth time this season. The San Antonio, Texas, native also ranks sixth with both 4.12 digs and 0.29 aces per set in the SEC. Meghan Mannari notched a career-best 17 digs, while Sam Delahoussaye corralled 15 digs of her own. The duo has contributed a combined 21 double figure dig efforts for the season. Brittney Johnson eclipsed the 40-assist mark for the 10th time this season, while her 10.80 helpers per frame are the watermark in the SEC. She also added nine digs to fall just short of her 10th double-double of 2010. Angela Bensend tallied 14 kills and 16 digs en route to her seventh double-double. She continues to headline the SEC with 4.15 kills per set and surpassed the 900-spike mark for her career. Joining Bensend on the outside is Madie Jones, who ripped 10 of her match-high 18 kills during sets three and four against the Rebels. The 18 kills for Jones is her second-highest output of the season, while her .337 hitting percentage during SEC matches is eighth in the league. Desiree Elliott and Michele Williams hold down the middle attack for LSU. Elliott’s .363 hitting clip in league action is not only sixth but highest among SEC freshmen. Williams’ .325 ratio on 3.18 kills per set is eighth and ninth, respectively, in the SEC rankings. Tania Schatow matched a season-high with seven kills and tacked on five blocks against Ole Miss. Over her last five matches, Schatow has chipped in 23 kills and 18 blocks. LSU heads into the home stretch of the regular season with a pair of tough road tilts against No. 21 Tennessee [2:30 p.m.CT, Friday] and Kentucky [12:30 p.m. CT, Sunday].
