BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend when four Lady Tigers compete in Northwestern University’s Wildcat Fall Invitational, beginning Friday at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
Sophomore Kaitlin Burns and freshmen Yvette Vlaar, Ariel Morton and Hayley Everett will make the trip to Evanstown, Ill. The three-day tournament will be held at the Combe Tennis Center, and matches will begin at 9 a.m., on Saturday and Sunday.
“This is a good tournament,” head coach Tony Minnis said. “Northwestern has had one of the top programs in the country the past few seasons, and there will be some good teams there, so this is a great chance for us to gain some experience, see where we’re at and keep working.”
Burns is scheduled to face South Carolina’s Dijana Sticic in the opening round of the top singles flight. A 2010 All-Louisiana Second Team performer, Burns got off to a 1-2 start on the season and notched a victory over Stephanie Danesis (Miami of Ohio) at the Hoosier Classic two weeks ago.
Vlaar will take on Notre Dame’s Natalie Edell in singles. A product of Weert, Netherlands, Vlaar made her Lady Tiger debut at the SEC Coaches’ Classic in September and earned a victory over Auburn’s Emily Newton in straight sets.
Morton will challenge South Carolina’s Miki Jocic. The Houston native also made her first collegiate appearance at the SEC Coaches’ Classic and emerged victorious in the first singles match of her career against Auburn’s Jacqueline Kasler.
Everett will play Cassandra Escobar of Iowa. A product of Mandeville, La., Everett played three singles matches at the SEC Coaches’ Classic.
In doubles, Morton and Vlaar will team together in the Flight ‘A’ draw. The duo will play Western Michigan’s Rachel Denny and April Kerr. Burns and Everett will face Western Michigan’s Amanda Moccia and Maggie Remynse.
