BATON ROUGE – After winning his first career individual tournament championship by four shots a week ago at the David Toms Intercollegiate, LSU junior Austin Gutgsell received national recognition for his accomplishment on Monday afternoon as he was named the Golfweek National Player of the Week.
Gutgsell, who ranks No. 108 among college golfers nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings this week, fired rounds of 3-under 69, 4-under 68 and 3-under 69 for a winning 54-hole score of 10-under par 206 on Oct. 18-19 at The Country Club of Louisiana.
While playing as an individual, Gutgsell shattered his previous career-low tournament score by 11 strokes as his previous best of 1-over 217 at the John Hayt Invitational last spring.
He captured medalist honors over teammates and All-America contenders Ken Looper and John Peterson, who finished in a three-way tie for second place on the leaderboard with matching totals of 6-under 210 in the event. LSU also captured the team title with a two-stroke victory over No. 8-ranked Arkansas, posting a 54-hole team score of 16-under 848 to win the David Toms Intercollegiate.
