Men’s Golf Wraps Up Day 1 at Jack Nicklaus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the LSU men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of competition at the 2010 Jack Nicklaus Invitational on Monday with a 36-hole team score of 37-over par 597 in the event being held at the par-70 layout at Ohio State’s Scioto Country Club.

The Tigers followed a 23-over 303 in the morning round with a 14-over 294 in the afternoon round to end the first day of action in eighth place in the team standings.

The Arkansas Razorbacks finished the day with a two-stroke lead in the team standings after posting a 36-hole score of 18-over 578. The Oklahoma State Cowboys follow in second place at 20-over 580, while Illinois (581), Southern California (586) and Texas (586) round out the tournament’s top-five teams.

Senior All-American Andrew Loupe and junior Sang Yi matched one another stroke-for-stroke in the first day of competition with equal scores of 6-over 76 in the first round and 4-over 74 in the second round to finish the day in a tie for 25th place on the individual leaderboard at 10-over 150. Loupe is making his fall debut after missing LSU’s title winning performance at the Gopher Invitational with a shoulder injury.

Junior Austin Gutgsell and freshman Smylie Kaufman follow in a tie for 32nd place overall with matching scores of 11-over 151, while senior Clayton Rotz finished the day in a tie for 36th place at 12-over 152.

Arkansas was led to the top of the team standings by a trio of golfers to finish Monday’s action in the Top 10 of the leaderboard, including Jamie Marshall’s even-par score of 140 that is tied for first place overall with Illinois’ Luke Guthrie. Two Razorbacks finished the day in a tie for seventh place on the leaderboard as Sebastian Cappelen and Ethan Tracy posted matching scores of 4-over 144.

The Tigers are paired with the Purdue Boilermakers in Tuesday’s final round and will open from the back nine with tee times beginning at 8:54 a.m. CT. Live scoring of the third and final round of the tournament will be provided by Golfstat and can be found online at www.golfstat.com.
