BATON ROUGE – LSU women’s tennis players Whitney Wolf and Keri Frankenberger will travel to California to take part in the 2010 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
The pre-qualifying singles and pre-qualifying doubles rounds will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center followed by the qualifying rounds, beginning Monday at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. The championship rounds begin Thursday, Oct. 7.
Wolf, who is ranked No. 122 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, will open play Saturday afternoon (3 p.m., CT) in the singles pre-qualifying round against nationally-ranked Jelena Durisic of North Carolina. If Wolf wins, she would advance to face the winner of Evgenia Kryuchkova (Utah) and Joanna Mather (Florida) later that day.
The junior would then need to win her second-round match and emerge victorious in a third match Sunday to advance to the qualifying round.
A native of Pride, La., Wolf has already gotten off to a fast start this season as she defeated a pair of top-35 opponents at the SEC Coaches’ Classic, Sept. 10-12.
Frankenberger, a sophomore who was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team last season, is currently the top alternate in the women’s pre-qualifying bracket and may gain entry should an individual withdraw.
In doubles, Wolf and Frankenberger have earned a spot in the qualifying round. The duo, which is currently No. 41 in the national doubles rankings, led the Lady Tigers with a 10-5 record competing out of the No. 1 slot last season.
“We’re really excited to take two girls out to California for such a prestigious tournament,” said assistant coach Lisa Jackson. “We have worked hard, and we’re hoping to compete well.”
