BATON ROUGE – Four LSU gymnasts received recognition as Scholastic All-Americans, the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced recently.
Sophomore Janelle Garcia, redshirt freshmen Kaleigh Dickson and Lainie Fleming and 2010 senior Sabrina Franceschelli received the honor.
“Academics is our mission,” LSU coach D-D Breaux said. “We try as a program never to lose sight of the fact that we are an academic institution and our mission here is to mentor our student-athletes to become the very best students. We want them to be dedicated and totally committed to academic and athletic excellence, and these four young ladies certainly represent our mission.”
A native of Glendale, Calif., Fleming maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a freshman last season. Fleming suffered a wrist injury before the 2010 season began and was forced to redshirt.
Franceschelli, a 2009 All-American in the all-around, finished her career in the spring. She recorded a 3.70 GPA in 2009-10 to receive Scholastic All-America honors for the second time in her career as she was also recognized in 2008. Franceschelli was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll as well.
Dickson finished with a 3.64 GPA last year as a true freshman, and she redshirted the 2010 season after suffering a major knee injury last December.
Garcia received the Scholastic All-America honor by earning a 3.60 GPA her freshman year. She saw limited action in 2010, but she provided valuable depth on all four events.
The NACGC/W annually awards Scholastic All-America honors to student-athletes who finish the current academic school year with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
