TACOMA, Wash. – A school record six LSU golfers have qualified for the 110th United States Amateur Championship and are ready to tee it up in the nation’s most prestigious amateur tournament starting with the first round of stroke play on Monday morning at picturesque Chambers Bay.
Graduating senior Brent Blaum, senior All-American John Peterson, senior Clayton Rotz and junior Sang Yi will join incoming freshmen Franco Castro and Andrew Presley in this year’s U.S. Amateur.
Rotz is making his team-leading fourth appearance in the U.S. Amateur Championship, while both Blaum and Peterson are making their second appearance and Castro, Presley and Yi are making their debuts.
The 110th edition of the most prestigious amateur event sponsored by the United States Golf Association is set to run through Aug. 29 with the field being cut to 64 following two rounds of stroke play. Those who make the cut will then compete against one another in six rounds of single-elimination match play to determine who will take home the Havemeyer Trophy as this year’s champion.
This year’s field will play one stroke play round at both Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Wash., and The Home Course in nearby DuPont, while Chambers Bay will play host to the match play tournament.
Presley will be the first Tiger to tee off Monday at 9:25 a.m. CDT as he tees off from the back nine of the par-71 course at Chambers Bay, while Yi and Blaum will follow off the back nine at 11:15 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively. Castro is the first to tee off at the par 72 Home Course at 11:05 a.m. CDT, followed by Peterson off the front nine at 3:10 p.m. and Rotz off the front nine at 4:10 p.m.
All participants will then switch courses for Tuesday’s second round as Peterson (9:55 a.m.), Rotz (10:55 a.m.) and Castro (4:20 p.m.) will play Chambers Bay and Blaum (10:45 a.m.), Presley (2:40 p.m.) and Yi (4:30 p.m.) will each play The Home Course with an eye on advancing to match play.
