BATON ROUGE – Senior Courtney Alexander has been a leader of the LSU soccer team on and off the playing field throughout her outstanding career in Baton Rouge, and she will lead the team once again this fall as she has been named team captain as the Tigers prepare for their season opener on Sunday.
The Tigers open up the 2010 regular season on Sunday as they play host to the South Alabama Jaguars at the LSU Soccer Complex in a match scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. CDT.
As the lone senior on a roster of 25 student-athletes, Alexander is looking to lead the Tigers back to the pinnacle of the Southeastern Conference as they enter the 2010 season as the three-time defending SEC Western Division champions and runners-up in the overall SEC championship race in each of the last two seasons. The team has also competed in the NCAA Tournament in three-straight seasons.
“Cojo (Alexander) is a tremendous leader of this team. She has proven that time and time again during the three years she has been in our program,” said LSU head coach Brian Lee. “She is just a winner. Whether it’s been leading us to success on the field, leading our community service efforts or setting an example to our team in the classroom, Cojo is exactly the kind of student-athlete we want representing our program.
“What sets her apart from many great players is her humility. She is willing to take on any role we ask her to if it is in the best interest of the team. We expect nothing less from our student-athletes.”
