Women’s Tennis Players Named Scholar-Athletes

BATON ROUGE – Four LSU women’s tennis players were recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their hard work in the classroom, earning ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, the organization announced recently.

Seniors Nicole Kantor, Sloane Mathis and Hannah Robinson along with freshman Ebie Wilson all earned the academic distinction.

“That’s a great accomplishment for these girls to be able to balance both athletics and academics, especially our three seniors, which says a lot about their dedication in the classroom,” LSU coach Tony Minnis said.

Kantor, Mathis and Robinson received the honor for the fourth-straight year, capping their excellent four-year careers with the Lady Tigers both on and off the courts.

Kantor compiled 80 singles victories and 63 doubles wins during her career at LSU and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2009. She was also named to the SEC Community Service Team in 2009 and 2010 for her service efforts in the community.

Robinson made her mark early for the Tigers, recording an impressive 24-15 record in singles and a 23-15 mark in doubles as a freshman in 2007, earning Louisiana Freshman of the Year Honors. She followed with a stellar sophomore campaign, finishing with All-Louisiana First Team and Second Team All-SEC accolades in 2008.

Mathis was a four-year contributor for the Tigers, racking up a combined 23 victories during her LSU career.

Wilson, who will be a sophomore in 2010-11, earned Scholar-Athlete honors for the first time. The Mobile, Ala., native finished an excellent freshman campaign in which she collected 12 singles and 14 doubles victories for the Tigers.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, an athlete must be a varsity letter winner, earn a grade point average of at least 3.5 and have been enrolled in his or her present school for at least two semesters.

The Lady Tigers will kick off the 2010-11 season on Sept. 10 at the SEC Coaches Classic in Auburn, Ala.
